Got motivated yesterday by Sheffield’s Half Marathon or this month’s London Marathon and want to start or get back into doing regular exercise and keeping fit in Sheffield? Well, don’t worry here you’ll find lots of tips and advice on how to keep fit for free or cheaply whilst at Uni in Sheffield, both in and out of your flat.
Not sure how to keep fit in Sheffield as a University student, well luckily, you're in the perfect city, keeping fit in Sheffield isn’t hard you just need 1) to know a few tricks, 2) to know a few places 3) Bit of motivation, unfortunately we can't help with that one, so we would recommend teaming up with your flatmates or University colleagues.
Well, Sheffield is the perfect solution as it offers a variety of local parks, one of UK’s biggest National Park (the Peak Districts) and multiple university sport clubs, gyms and student discounts.
Short on the pennies or would like to save a few pounds, keeping fit for FREE in Sheffield is easy. You have choices, you can either get out your home, outdoors or stay in your studio, flat or house as suggested below:
Don’t be scared to get out of the flat, and take advantage of Sheffield’s green spaces.
The Peak District is the greatest free asset of Sheffield, offering all students (Undergraduates and Postgraduates) and Graduates, a breath of fresh air from all the studying and city life. Its vast size (covers Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester). Can be used for everything, from walking, running, biking to climbing.
Access to Peak District: Easy access via public transport via train or bus, drive or even run, walk or bike there.
Sheffield has a great selection of local parks, that can be used for workouts, biking, running or walking.

Access: if you live on Ecclesall Road (https://sheffieldpropertytolet.co.uk/area/ecclesall-road) you have easy access to the Botanical Gardens, Encliffe Park and Porter Valley.
If you live in the City Centre it is slightly more challenging, but by using local transport you have the option to visit Graves Park.
If you live on London road, in Nether Edge, or Sharrow you have easy access to Encliffe Park, Botanical Gardens, Chelsea Park.
If you don’t fancy leaving the apartment there are loads of workouts you can do in your own home, by just checking out what is online. If you feel demotivated or awkward working out on your own, why not get your flatmates involved?

Apps: Check our Google Play or iStore where you can download loads of different workout apps, for different levels and different types of exercises, they will even send you motivational notification so that you keep with it.
Both Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield Union have sport clubs that you can join, some competitive and some not.
Both Sheffield Uni’s provide modern sport facilities at a moderate price.
When signing up to a gym ask if they have student discount as many do.
